What are dermal fillers?
Lines and wrinkles start to appear when the skin’s collagen and elastin levels decrease. Sun damage, dehydration and lifestyle factors can also contribute to signs of ageing. Skin sagging also becomes more prominent over time due to these changes.
Dermal filler injections are designed to restore volume to key areas of the face and stimulate the production of collagen. This versatile treatment can be used on several different areas of the face and body, including the jaw, hands, lips and cheeks.
All that’s required to achieve these results is a series of fine injections that won’t take longer than an hour to administer. Thereafter, patients are free to return to their usual routine, with a few exceptions.
Dermal fillers can also be used with anti-wrinkle injections to simultaneously prevent the formation of deep expression lines. During your consultation at Skin Confidence Clinic, we will assist you with a tailored treatment plan that addresses your specific concerns.
What to expect
Once your skin has been evaluated and it’s determined that you would benefit from dermal fillers, your skin is prepared for treatment. To ensure you’re comfortable throughout, a topical numbing agent will be applied to the treatment area.
A series of fine injections will then be used to restore volume to key areas of the face. Here at Skin Confidence Clinic in Brisbane, we take a less-is-more approach, which is why we inject the filler gradually. If for any reason you are not satisfied with the outcome, a dissolving enzyme can be injected to reverse the treatment.
The average appointment usually doesn’t last longer than 30 minutes and patients are free to return to work directly after their appointment. However, vigorous exercise, extreme temperatures and touching or rubbing the treated area are all discouraged for a day or two.

How do dermal fillers work?
Dermal filler injections are made up of a substance that occurs naturally in the body. Its main function is to keep your skin and tissues well hydrated by locking in moisture and retaining water levels. Injecting this substance back into the skin works to plump and restore volume to the skin and minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by ‘filling’ those lines back in.
Ideal candidates for dermal fillers
A consultation will be required to determine whether dermal fillers are the best treatment option for your specific concerns. Patients should be in good physical health and want to address volume loss in the face. Areas such as the cheeks, eyes and lips are generally primary concerns. If severe skin laxity is present, additional treatment options will need to be discussed, including surgical alternatives.
In general, you are an ideal candidate for dermal fillers if:
- You are at least 18 years old
- You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
- You are physically and mentally healthy
- You have no skin diseases, bleeding disorders or serious medical conditions
- You have realistic expectations
Dermal filler results
Dermal fillers add instant volume to the skin, so you will see a visible result immediately after your treatment. However, it can take up to four weeks for the filler to fully settle into the tissue, after which you will notice the full results.
Your treatment results can last from six months to two years, depending on the type of filler used and how quickly your body metabolises the ingredients. Since results are not permanent, you may need top-up treatments in the future to maintain the results. Additional treatments are usually recommended once signs of ageing start to become noticeable again.
Are dermal filler injections painful?
The level of pain and discomfort associated with the treatment is different for every patient. Most patients report that the injection process may feel like a slight pinch. As the filler is injected, you may feel a tolerable stinging sensation.
To prevent any discomfort during your treatment, we will apply a numbing cream to your skin. In addition, the needles used during the injection are very small, so they should not cause significant pain. After your treatment, we will provide you with specific instructions on how to manage discomforts, such as the use of ice packs and pain medications.
Reversing the results
If you are unhappy with your results for any reason, we can inject an enzyme in the treated area to reverse the results of the treatment. This special enzyme dissolves the particles of the filler ingredient. As a result, the treated area returns to its original appearance. It is important to keep in mind that regardless of whether the effects of the treatment can be reversed, dermal fillers’ results are temporary.
Dermal filler side effects
Any side effects associated with dermal fillers are temporary and mild. You may experience some bruising, lumpiness, redness and swelling, however this is normal and will disappear within a few days.
Dermal filler downtime
There is little to no downtime required after your treatment. In fact, you can immediately resume your work and daily activities afterwards. Just make sure to follow the post-treatment instructions to achieve your desired results and prevent unwanted outcomes.
Caring for the skin following treatment
Before you go home, we will give you specific instructions that will help prevent complications and achieve optimal results. This may include the following:
- Avoid direct sun exposure
- Avoid drinking alcohol
- Avoid exposure to hot environments, such as saunas
- Do not engage in strenuous exercises for 24 hours
- Do not pick or massage the injection sites
- Minimise movement of the treated body area
If you notice any unusual symptoms, please contact the clinic immediately.
